July 2010
Thirty-five teams of four took part in the thirteenth Annual Sporting Challenge on a hot and balmy evening as a precursor to the Village Show. Butt Field was brimming with the many competitors, spectators and supporters who also enjoyed the delicious food from the BBQ and the thirst-quenching drinks from the beer tent.
Each team took part in a spot of tennis, cricket, golf, bowls and football. Points were awarded according to each team’s position in each event – ie the winner of the bowls event scored 1 point, second place scored 2 etc and each team accumulated points according to their position in each of the five sports. The overall winning team was therefore the team with the least number of points over all five events.
Congratulations to this year’s winning team – East Bridgford El Spaniard. Yet again, the winners did not win any of the five individual sports outright, but as they came second in golf, third in football, and seventh in cricket, their scores were enough for them to claim the first place overall.
Gwenda Watkins presented trophies to the winners of each sport and the Richard Watkins Memorial Cup to the overall winners, who also secured their place on the Roll Of Honour.
Proceeds to this event go towards the upkeep of the Sports Pavilion.
